From ’70s Turkish rock and Afro-pop to an Indonesian cover of the Bee Gees, this mix has got it all. There’s no telling where some of these tracks came from or where some of them may lead us, but one thing is certain – Brian Delatorre’s style remains timeless alongside this diverse array of tunes from all over the globe.

Brian was kind enough to answer a few questions we had about the mixtape and let us in on a few more tunes he’s been bumping.

What’s up Brian? Hope you’re doing well in these crazy times! What’s a song that’s been on repeat for you during this lockdown?

So many albums and songs during all this. But I’d have to say the song I’ve been listening to the most is called “Where are we going?” by Donald Byrd from the album Black Byrd.

The Fela Kuti song you skate to in “Hi-Grade Blend” is one of the most powerful songs on the mixtape. Who were some of your favorite musicians/artists around that era of filming?

Let’s see, it came out in 2006. Fela was definitely in there amongst all the reggae. Really lots of reggae, Sizzla, Capleton, Buju. Lotta dub, Augustus, King Tubby, Prince Fari.

What’s the story behind the song selection in your “Welcome to MIA” part? The Selda Bagcan track rips! Did you pick the tunes yourself?

Nah, I had help from my friend Rob Harris. We were listening to a hip hop song that sampled Selda and was like, yo this woman’s voice is incredible. Also was dating a Turkish girl at the time and was really hyped on Turkish Psych Folk/Rock. So I mentioned it to Josh Stewart while he was editing and asked if I could skate to “Ince Ince”. At first he said I don’t know man. He started putting it together and called me saying that it might work. I knew he would be able to make it work. It’s Josh. Can’t thank him enough for this part and both songs worked out. Thanks again Josh!

Is there any one song in particular that comes to mind when looking back on all the parts you’ve put out? One that holds a special place in your heart?

One song? Damn that’s hard…Probably “To Love Somebody” by Dara Puspita. Love that song.

Is there any one song in particular that fans of yours bring up when talking to you about your skating?

That Selda Bagcan song “Ince Ince”.

And lastly, what’s your favorite song you’ve discovered from a skate video?

Oof tough haha so many. I’m still discovering new music from skate videos. It’s never ending. Too many skate videos for just one song.

Hell yeah, thanks Brian!

Almost every part that has a song on the mixtape is below for your viewing pleasure.

In Search of Roots and Culture (2004) – Danger Mouse, “Dec. 4th”

A throwback to the early 2000s and undenied hype behind the brimmed beanie. This song is off “The Grey Album”, a mashup of Jay-Z’s “Black Album” and The Beatles “White Album”. Shoutout to Trevor Prescott and Geoff Dermer for the shared part as well.

Seasons 3 (2005) – Les McCann, “The Harlem Buck Dance Strut”

Brian with the intro part and some heavy bangers over Les McCann’s smooth jazz licks. Nothing more is required.

Hi Grade Blend (2006) – Fela Kuti, “ Expensive Shit”

This song is the longest song on the mixtape by far. But it’s nothing short of excellent paired with some insane clips from a young Delatorre. The ender in this one still stands as gnarly!

Seasons 4 (2008) – Budos Band, “Chicago Falcon”

I couldn’t find this part online but the song selection definitely fits with the DELA vibe.

Welcome to MIA (2010) – Selda Bagcan, “Ince Ince Bir Kar Yagar” / Dara Puspita, “To Love Somebody”

The songs from Brian’s “Welcome to MIA” part are dope. Both are from around the same time period (late 60s-early 70s) and have a unique flavor paired with some of the heaviest clips on the list.
Shoutout to the alternate mix song as well – NEWS, “Loser”

Search the Horizon (2013) – The Babies, “Moonlight Miles”/ Allah Las, “ Busman’s Holiday”

Habitat is definitely the indie rock brand of the skate industry (Brian has first part again!)

Purple (2018) – New Order, “Cries and Whispers”

I’ve been a huge fan of this song since the day I saw this part. It was recorded by New Order’s in the early 1980s but wasn’t released on a tape until 1987. Nonetheless, its grace and beauty have been presented alongside some quality footage from Brian Delatorre and Al Davis in “Purple”.

“OJ Wheels” (2019) – Eddie Holman, “Four Walls”

This part and song go together like butter on bread. Continued grace from DELA in his newest addition from OJ.
