Ramp’s Out Back: Party at the Ponds

Hidden in the backwoods of Michigan is a preservation of skateboarding’s rebirth, a historian’s wet dream. Party at the Ponds is an annual event hosted by Rich Pond at his backyard ramp about an hour or so north of Detroit. Vert freaks from around the country, but more specifically the Midwest, gather to skate, camp, bullshit, and reminisce upon better days.

In its 9th edition, this was by far the most genuine display of skateboarding I have ever witnessed. No judgement, no prizes, and an abundance of Skeleton Key gear. A vast majority of those skating would be considered “over the hill,” but that didn’t stop anyone from getting smoked.

It’s hard to put into words how heavy this weekend really was, but I think one of the older skaters, Tony Hank, who made the trip out said it best;

“…a gathering of diehard vert skaters that reminds me of a simpler time in skateboarding; misfits getting together, listening to punk, and encouraging each other to push their limits. The only difference is that now many of us have kids, jobs, grey hair, and/or arthritis. But the passion is timeless…and the ramps are much better.”

In what feels to be the most confusing time in skate history, weekends like Party at the Ponds is a clear cut reminder of what skateboarding is, was, and meant to be. Reuniting with old pals and making some new ones. It was an absolute honor to be a part of this weekend.

Cheers to everyone present, until next time.
