Growing up in central Jersey, the “Trenton Banks” were my friends’ and my connection to the world of skateboarding. Unique and immediately recognizable, the Banks was the spot that we could pick out in big brands’ videos that were filmed mostly in more well-known skate destinations like Los Angeles, New York, and Barcelona. That little bit of familiarity made us feel like we were part of the worldwide skate community even when the best trick we could pull off at the spot was a kick turn, and that connection gave us pride in our city and our scene.
Over the years, the Trenton Banks have become an iconic spot on par with El Toro, Hollywood High, the Pyramid Ledges, and Muni. As an organization focused on building Trenton’s skate scene, the Freedom crew had been looking for a chance to do something special at this legendary spot for a while. When we were approached with the opportunity to participate in Trenton’s Ciclovia open streets festival and saw that the map passed by the Banks, we knew this was our chance.
Thanks to an event team that was down for the cause, NJ Skate Shop, and Dogwood Skate Shop, we threw what may have been the first ever official contest at the Banks. Lots of great skating went down, including a few potential NBDs. Just as important, we also brought some obstacles for beginners and boards to give out to local kids, so we got to watch in real time as the next generation of rippers got inspired by some of the best local shredders.
Thanks to everyone who made this event possible as well as all the skaters, filmers, and photographers who have made the Banks a special spot for generations. If you’re ever in Trenton, make sure you stop by. But be ready — they’re steeper than they look!
