Always pack a flash. Why would I pack a flash to a surf trip in Costa Rica? For reasons just like this. The mistake of driving to the nautical town of Playas del Coco led us to a perfect concrete skatepark.
We ended up in this beach town after some federales told us we weren’t allowed to camp where we wanted to, and that if we wanted to navigate to our surf break we had to stay in Playas del Coco.
This town is the hub for surfers trying to get to Witches Rock, a world class surf break right on the border of Costa Rica and Nicaragua that’s only accessible by boat. We listened to the federales, and ended up in a hostel near the beach next to a skatepark.
We would walk past the skatepark with surfboards every morning at 5am, ready to jump on the boat out to sea, surf all day, and return to the park at 5pm to watch kids of all ages skate until dark. The first night at the hostel I grabbed some beers, my camera, and the flash I almost left at home. Cheers.
