The NYC Skateboard Coalition & the Brooklyn Skate Garden co-hosted a clean up/skate event last Saturday, November 9th at Golconda Skatepark, more commonly known as Fat Kid.
The coalition, led by Ian Clarke, has been involved in a series of park clean ups over the last few years, but this was the first time Brooklyn Skate Garden hopped in.
The main goal of the Brooklyn Skate Garden, founded by Loren Michelle, Pablo “P-Splifff” Ramirez’s mother, has been to build an inclusive skate garden in the greater Prospect Park area where everyone from moms to old pool heads can shred.
A petition to build the park was drafted by WIL540, Haroun Thiam, Wyeth Stewart, and Edwin Groby, and has quickly been gaining signatures, with endorsements from the Tony Hawk Foundation and Steve Rodriguez, among others.
Ian and the Coalition have had a long relationship with the NYC Parks Dept. and got them to come out and give everyone access to brooms and dustpans.
With free breakfast and coffee provided by Loren, everyone happily grabbed brooms and started cleaning. The park was quickly transformed into a trash free zone by the more than 30 people that showed up to lend a hand.
Clarke also installed a lock box for brooms and other things to be stored in a more accessible place for park locals, so that the park may stay nice.
Before long the park was much cleaner and everyone was skating, with a sick @grlswirlnyc session going on at the basketball courts just below the park. Sticks & Stones also provided some boards and product for the kids who came out to help.
It was an awesome day for the community to come together to try and make a difference in a place they call their own.
