Ben Walters “Hold on for Dear Life”

Filming and editing by Sam Operchuck. Additional filming by Courtney Lang.

Interview by Zach Moeller.

What’s up Ben, where are you from?

I am initially from Bowie, Maryland but began spending a lot of time in Annapolis. Most of this part was filmed around the Annapolis area including some spots in Washington D.C.

What’s up with the title? Isn’t that a crypto term?

The title first came to me because I started getting into stocks at the beginning of the year and the term has been interchangeable between that and crypto. One day we were compiling footage and that was the first thing that came to mind so we went with it. I more recently began dabbling in crypto which has been kind of confusing but definitely interesting to learn. I started learning about NFTs as well which is even more confusing.

You filmed this part in 6 months, how did you find the time to be so productive and how often did you have to set out on filming missions to stack footage?

Well on weekdays, my set routine would be that I would go to work and then hit up one of my filmers, Sam, and see if he was available. Most of the time he would be so then we both would quickly brainstorm a spot and hope for the best. Weekends were a little more relaxed where we could travel out a bit more and know what spot we would go to. My job has been more lenient given Covid so that helped make extra time to film also.

What’s next? Any future projects you’re working on?

I do! I plan to put out at least one more part with my friend James Park by the end of the year, so hopefully that will come into fruition. Other than that I just plan to keep filming for the following months.

Any advice to anyone looking for the motivation to film a project in this day an age?

Getting motivation can definitely be hard especially when parts are put out every week and social media is at our fingertips to see content. I find that what has helped recently is thinking about the end result of the project after choosing a song that flows well and editing it accordingly. It is certainly a love/hate relationship in the process but the finished product has always made me feel satisfied and accomplished. I also think of the filmer I am with too. Aside from trying to produce footage in general, getting a filmer who’s willing to wait for you to land a trick is a blessing itself and I don’t want to take that for granted. They don’t have to be there so I want to perform my best to create a successful session.

Shout outs?

Of course! Major shout outs to my filmers/friends James Park, Sam Operchuck, and Courtney Lang, Chris Ortiz, Dave Bernier, Pure Boardshop, New Balance, Blind, Pig, and Jason at Dickies. Thank you to anyone who has shown support when releasing new content!
